Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all His benefits
Psalms 103:2 (NIV)
When the Israelites were in the wilderness, God served them a special delicacy. “He rained down manna for the people to eat. He gave them the grain of heaven. Human beings ate the bread of angels.” (Psalms 78:24-25).
If you were an Israelite, would you desire any other food? Well, the freed slaves had other ideas.
After eating manna for some time, they complained, “If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna! ” (Numbers 11:4-6).
They forgot the excruciating pain and humiliation of slavery. The mighty miracles, the highway through the Red Sea, and the two protective pillars were no longer significant.
They were ready to become slaves again because of the inconveniences of life in the wilderness. Their appetites were more important than freedom and fellowship with God.
How about us? Are we any different? We tend to focus on and exaggerate what we lack at the expense of what we possess.
God gives us life, good health, work, families, friends, school fees, food, fresh air, peaceful communities, and nature to support us. While you may not have all these blessings at the same time, are you thankful for those you possess?
Like the Israelites, do you have selective memory? Do you choose to glorify what you lack and forget what God has blessed you with?
Write down all the blessings you enjoy today, and you will have no reason to complain about what you lack.
Prayer
Praise the LORD, my soul, and do not forget all His benefits.
Why do we tend to remember what we lack while forgetting what we already have? What’s your take on this devotional? Please comment to let other readers know.
Elder this devotion is indeed a reflection of most of us as christians. When we are blessed we easily forget the blessings we have at the smallest mishaps in our lives and grumble like the israelites did. How i pray that the lord removes this spirit from us so that we dont end up being like the israelites .
You’ve put it very clearly, Brian. God bless you.
Count your blessings name them one by one and see what God has done.money cannot buy our reward in heaven nor our home on high.God help me to recognise and appreciate what you’re doing in life.
Amen, George. We need to always give thanks to God.
No day one can be able to count God’s blessings. Besides the day you feel annoyed of God, try to count.
In the midst of the agony try to count and you will find still God has done much to you.
Wow! I love that angle of looking at this issue. The bottom line is that we need to adopt an attitude of gratitude towards God and men.
God help us to be grateful for the blessings that you have bestowed upon us. And may you give us contentment in what you have blessed us with.
Amen, Harriet. That’s the spirit of a child of God.
