Do You Want to See God?

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, February 27, 2024
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Matthew 5:8 (NKJV)

My daughter often asks me questions I cannot answer, especially about nature and the workings of God. In such moments, I urge her to wait until the day we shall be in heaven because we shall see God face-to-face, and she will ask God all the questions that baffle her today. For this and other reasons, I can’t wait to see God on that glorious day.

The Pure in Heart Shall See God

Jesus, though, gives us a condition before we can see God. In the sermon on the mount, He taught, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8). To many people in the immediate audience, this statement was disconcerting. Did Christ mean that God did not regard the many purification rituals under the law of Moses?

To be pure in heart means one is liberated from sensuality, pure from lust, but genuine in the soul’s deep goals and intentions. Moreover, he is free from pride and self-seeking, modest, selfless, and innocent. A pure heart does not entertain bitterness, revenge, or jealousy. Such a mind loves to meditate on the word of God, obeying Him unreservedly.

Do You Want to See God?

What an unachievable standard of character for sinful human beings like us! We join Job in asking, “Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one!” (Job 14:4). You need not despair, though, because when the Holy Spirit dwells in you, your journey to purity begins. He purifies the thoughts, the intentions, the words, and the actions.

Do you want to see God? Do you desire the purity of the whole being? It is not by your power but by the grace of God that you shall see God face-to-face on that glorious day of Christ’s second coming. Invite God, the Holy Spirit, to dwell in you now and cooperate with Him in your transformation.

Prayer
Almighty God, I want to see You face-to-face. Make me pure.
