Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men.
Proverbs 22:29 (NKJV)
You may have read about star footballers who learned the trade on dusty streets using improvised balls. They only had latent skill and a determination to succeed. They end up playing in top leagues where they earn top salaries.
No longer do they play before local crowds. The high and mighty pay dearly to watch these star players.
The same is true of any sport or profession. The individual spends hours, days and years perfecting the skill. Finally, through sweat and tears, they reach the global stage – the pinnacle.
Solomon had this to say about such people, “Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men (Proverbs 22:29).
The phrase ‘who excels in his work’ is also rendered ‘diligent in his business’ (KJV), ‘skilled in his work’ (NASB), ‘skillful and experienced in his work’ (Amplified Bible) and ‘who does a good job’ (Good News Bible).
In other words, when we focus and give 100% or more to our natural endowments, abilities and whatever we are doing, the reward is a fulfilling life and honour before our fellow men.
Eventually, the highest earthly offices open doors to those who excel in whatever God has placed in their hands.
Do you want to stand before kings (to attain excellence, success and recognition)?
How much time, money and other resources are you spending developing your talent, profession, skills or business? What changes or improvements do you need to attain excellence?
Father God, help me excel in utilizing the gifts you have placed in my hands.
