Don’t Go Fishing!
Daily Devotional, Tuesday, January 26, 2021
You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.
Micah 7:19 (NIV)
One of my favourite childhood hobbies was fishing. Catching mudfish and catfish in the river was exciting. Occasionally, we would buy fishing hooks and go after Tilapia in a government-owned pond. Not even the bold warning sign – NO FISHING – would scare us.
The Perils of Disobedience
Many were the times we were forced to flee from menacing guards. There were also disappointing but hilarious moments when one would catch crabs, tadpoles and frogs instead of fish.
Sometime we would go home empty-handed and tired. Often, the small fish we caught could not make a decent meal. Need I mention the bruises and other injuries in the process of fishing?
No Fishing!
Looking back, I feel we should have obeyed the authorities and not gone after the Tilapia. Whoever had placed the sign at the pond knew very well that our efforts would either be futile or of little satisfaction.
In a similar manner, God has placed a NO FISHING sign in a very critical area of our lives. Micah begins by marveling, “Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.” (Micah 7:18).
Into the Depths of the Sea
In verse 19, the prophet notes what God does with our sins, “you will … hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea”. When God forgive us, He tosses our sins into the depth of the sea; so far that we cannot reach down for them. In essence, God forgets our sins.
Unfortunately, many of us are fishermen. We ignore God’s warning not to go back to our sins. We fish for the guilty feelings. We doubt that God has really forgiven us. We allow the devil to drag us down the road of guilt.
Don’t Go Fishing
Stop keeping a record of your sins. Thank God for His forgiveness. Stop carrying the guilt with you. Don’t even allow other people to heap on you the guilt of forgiven sins. Don’t go fishing for forgiven sins!
Prayer
Father, thank you for forgiving me. Stop me from fishing out my guilt and living through it again.
Amen ,,that is my prayer today .
May it come, true, Brian.
