For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?
Mark 8:36 (NKJV)
Adolf Hitler was the most powerful political dictator in the world between 1933 and 1945. His invasion of Poland in September 1945 marked the beginning of World War II. Over 75 million lives died in the war, including over 6 million Jews.
Hitler, eventually, committed suicide, to avoid being captured by the Soviet Army. He never had a decent burial. His body was burned.
Just like people who wield immense power, those who possess colossal wealth, fame and success also risk hurtling down the same path as Hitler.
Consider Marilyn Monroe. She was a hugely successful Hollywood actress, yet she died of suspected suicide, at the young age of 36 years. Despite the world being at her feet, the beautiful blonde was not happy.
Jesus must have had the likes of Hitler and Munroe when He asked His disciples, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? (Mark 8:36).
Here is a scenario where a person enjoys everything there is in this life, yet loses his or her life eternally. While God does not expect us to live in deprivation and misery, He warns against allowing material gains to crowd Him out of our lives.
Shall we indulge in ungodly and excessive pleasure while ignoring the clear commands of God, or shall we deny ourselves worldly possessions and amusements that God prohibits?
In your life, what is the ‘whole world’ that is likely to cost you your salvation? Ask God to give you power to reject sin and embrace righteousness today. Choose wisely. Lord Jesus, I choose You above all else.
I chose that Christ may increase as I decrease.
If Christ increases in me I’ll be contented and grateful.
Lord I chose you once more.
