Though your beginning was small, yet your latter end would increase abundantly.
Job 8:7 (NKJV)
Job had lost his children, his wealth and even his health. His friends came to comfort him, but as the conversations continued, they began to draw conclusions about his suffering. Bildad believed Job must have done something wrong. In his mind, God always blessed virtuous people and punished sinful people immediately. That belief shaped the words he spoke to his hurting friend.
Misjudged but Not Forgotten
That said, one part of Bildad’s statement reflects a truth that appears throughout Scripture. He told Job, “Though your beginning was small, yet your latter end would increase abundantly.” God often chooses small beginnings. A shepherd boy becomes a king. A tiny seed grows into a large tree. What looks weak today can become strong through prayer, obedience and quiet trust in God over time.
Bildad’s error was not the statement itself but the way he applied it to Job’s situation. He assumed suffering always pointed to personal sin. Yet by the end of the book, God rebuked Job’s friends because they had not spoken rightly about God. Life is not always easy to explain. Sometimes faithful people suffer deeply, and those around them may not understand what God is doing.
Faith in Unnoticed Seasons
That is why today’s key text speaks both hope and caution to us. You may feel inadequate today. Your efforts may go unnoticed, and your prayers may seem unanswered. God, however, is not limited by small beginnings. He is often at work behind the scenes before we ever see the results. What looks weak and small today may be of tremendous importance in His hands tomorrow.
From Job’s story we learn that God’s wisdom is beyond our understanding. In the end Job was restored, but his best lesson was to trust God when life doesn’t make sense. When others don’t understand your situation or when your future looks uncertain, keep walking with the Lord. He sees the whole picture. He is faithful through every season of life.
Prayer
Help us, Almighty God, to trust You during our small beginnings and to remember that Your wisdom is ever greater than ours.
