Foundation, Substance and Evidence

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV)

We frequently hear the term “faith” at church, but today’s key text reiterates that faith is a foundation rather than merely a feeling. It is evidence and substance. That indicates that even if it is connected to something that is invisible to us, it is something tangible and real.

Substance of Things Hoped For

Everybody has hopes: peace, healing, provision, restoration, and so on. We long for better things and outcomes even when we are unable to even express what we are wishing for. Faith grounds our hopes in God’s promises, which are more profound than our desires.

What does it mean that faith is ‘evidence’? Even though you can’t see into the future, faith is the conviction that your request is already in God’s hands, even if you haven’t seen the answer yet.

Foundation, Substance and Evidence

Our good works are not the source of this type of confidence. It comes from being aware of whom you trust. God, our creator, loves us and will never abandon us. That is what He demonstrated through Christ’s death on the cross. Your faith turns into proof that God is at work, even when you can’t see it with physical eyes.

Almighty God, thank You for being my soul’s pivot. Strengthen my faith so that I can cling firmly to You in the face of uncertainty.
