From Empty Nets to Overflowing Boats

Daily Devotional – Thursday, September 11, 2025
When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
Luke 5:4 (NKJV)

A college student had failed an important exam and was ready to give up on her course. Her friend gently told her, “Don’t stay in the shallow end just because you’re scared. Try again, but go deeper this time.” That encouragement gave her the courage to study harder, and the second time around, she passed with flying colors.

Leaving the Shallow End

That moment is a lot like what Peter faced in Luke 5. He and his crew had spent the whole night fishing without catching a single thing. They were exhausted and probably embarrassed.

Then Jesus, a carpenter (not a fisherman), told Peter to head back out and fish again, this time in deeper water. It did not make sense. But Peter responded, “Because you say so, I will let down the nets.” The result? More fish than the nets could hold. In fact, the catch was so heavy that the boats almost sank.

The “deep water” here represents the places God calls us that feel risky or uncomfortable. This involves leaving our safe routines and comfort zones while trusting His word, even when logic suggests otherwise.

From Empty Nets to Overflowing Boats

Maybe for you, deep water looks like forgiving someone who hurt you, applying for that job you feel underqualified for, launching a project, starting a conversation about faith, or stepping into a ministry opportunity.

God often saves His biggest blessings for the places where we have to rely fully on Him. When we step out in faith, we open ourselves to miracles we would never see if we stayed in the shallows. What “deep water” is Jesus calling you to today? Take one brave step in obedience, even if it feels uncertain.

Prayer
Almighty God, give me the courage to trust You beyond my comfort zone. Lead me deeper, where Your power and provision are waiting.
