…But from this day on I will bless you
Haggai 2:19 (NIV)
The children of Israel played hide and seek against their God. God remained faithful to His promises but His people would serve Him today and rebel tomorrow. What is amazing, though, is God’s willingness to give them second chances even when they continued disobeying Him.
Prophet Haggai records one such incident. Israel had disobeyed God. In turn, He had withdrawn His blessings. Their farms did not yield as expected. “I struck you and all the products of your toil with blight and with mildew and with hail, yet you did not turn to me, declares the LORD.” Haggai 2:17.
God wanted His people to realize their sin, repent and be blessed again. Their reaction? They rebelled further. If you were God, would you have been patient with the disobedient nation? The Loving God went after His people, and made a beautiful promise to them.
In verse 19, God assures them that though their seed is in the barn and their fruit trees have been yielding nothing, “…from this day on I will bless you.”. In other words, I am not blessing you because you are faithful. No. In fact, you continue to disobey me and have not sought me.
God’s message to Israel is the same to us: “I am blessing you because I am a Loving God. I am blessing you despite your lack of faith and trust in me. I am willing to give you another opportunity. My love for you is manifested when I withdraw my blessings and when I restore them. Turn to me.”
Prayer
Father God, thank you for blessing me even though I don’t deserve it. Please don’t give up on me. Amen.
