And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
Matthew 14:29 (NKJV)
It is pitch-dark. The sea is boisterous. A boat carrying the twelve disciples of Jesus is in the midst of the sea. Some of them are seasoned fishermen, but they are worried. If only Jesus were with them, they thought, they would not be in this situation.
As if to aggravate their situation, a ghost appears from nowhere. It is walking on water. They cry out in fear. Unlike other ghosts, though, this one talks. Ironically, it reassures them, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27). It turns out the ‘ghost’ is Jesus!
Peter Came Down Out of the Boat
Another important character emerges in the plot of this story. Peter, one of the twelve, tells Jesus, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” (Verse 28). Peter wants a new experience.
Jesus invites Peter to take a leap of faith. “And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.” (Verse 29). Give credit to Peter; he gets out of the boat and walks on water!
It takes faith in Jesus for Peter to venture out of the boat. The eleven men who remain in the vessel do not experience this miracle. They prefer to remain in the comfort of the boat.
Get Out of the Boat
Like Peter, we can only achieve the extraordinary if we take steps of faith and leave our environment. God wants us to take the first step in response to His invitation. If, like Peter, we begin to sink, Jesus will rescue us.
Our boats could be relationships, careers, or situations that are not necessarily bad but hinder us from taking the big step into a better life. We will never realize our potential until we get out of our boats and, by faith, follow Jesus.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I have heard your call. I will take the leap of faith out of my comfort boat and follow You wherever you lead me.
