Give us day by day our daily bread.
Luke 11:3 (NKJV)
Jesus reminds His disciples to request God for daily bread in this straightforward but profound phrase, which teaches them how to pray. This prayer is a statement of our reliance on God for all of everything we need, be it spiritual, emotional or physical — and goes beyond simply requesting sustenance.
Everyday Sustenance
Asking God for daily bread is a recognition that everything we own is a gift from God, and just as He gave the Israelites manna in the wilderness, He promises to sustain us every day. While we may worry about our future, our relationships, our health, or our finances, Jesus encourages us to focus on the here and now and trust that God will provide what we need when we need it.
Jesus is more than just physical sustenance; He is the bread of life that came from heaven and that gives eternal life to those who eat it. Just as we need food for sustenance, we must feed on the word of God is we are to remain alive, spiritually speaking. Alongside scripture reading, Christians must prioritize prayer and fellowship with one another.
Give Us Our Daily Bread
Today’s key text encourages us to be thankful for what God gives us every day. Let us trust God in the present moment rather than worrying about the future. His supply brings us serenity as we cultivate an attitude of thankfulness for what we have. In what ways can you put your everyday needs in God’s hands today?
Prayer
Thank you for meeting my needs every day, Lord. Help me to fully trust You and not worry about the future. Please provide me with both spiritual and bodily nutrition.
