God is For Me

Daily Devotional – Monday, January 29, 2024
When I cry out to You, then my enemies will turn back. This I know, because God is for me.
Psalms 56:9 (NKJV)

David is fleeing from King Saul. There is barely a place to hide in Israel. The last resort for the son of Jesse is to flee to the Philistines, the avowed enemies of the Israelites. While Achish, the Philistine king, welcomes David, the monarch’s servants are not taking any chances. They remind Achish that David is actually the young Hebrew boy who killed the nation’s foremost warrior, Goliath, years before.

Where is God?

What a terrible idea of a refuge from the enemy! David has to think and act fast. He pretends to be mad. The king wonders why his servants are worried over a maniac. He has enough mad men around him. He does not need a foreign one! That is how David manages to flee to the cave of Adullam.

Where is God in David’s suffering? Why did He anoint this man to succeed Saul, yet allow David no peace? For how long will David have to flee from troubles and shed tears before God can intervene? David turns to God for relief from his tormentors, and in the process, he composes a psalm replete with profound insights.

God is For Me

He writes, “You number my wanderings; put my tears into Your bottle. Are they not in your book? When I cry out to you, then my enemies will turn back. This I know, because God is for me.” (Psalms 56:8-9). What a powerful expression of confidence in God! At a time when he should be desperate and probably doubting God’s goodness, David avows that God is always with him, recording every tear and pain.

How different would our reactions to trouble and persecution be if we reminded ourselves that God is for us? For His own reasons but for our personal good, the Lord allows us to undergo distress. When the enemy attacks and we appeal to God, we must trust that God is fighting on our side and that He means good for us. How will knowing God is for you change the way you view hard times and suffering?

Prayer
Thank you, God, because you are for me, especially in my most trying moments.
