The LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
Psalms 121:8 (NIV)
I have adhered to the same daily routine for years. I leave home in the morning, expecting to have a productive day. In the evening, I return, often exhausted, often happy. This happens so frequently that sometimes I take this blessing for granted.
In my human weakness, I forget that some people who wave their loved ones goodbye in the morning, may have said their last byes. Instead of hugs in the evening, some receive devastating news.
That is why I love Psalm 121:8, “The LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” I am reminded that I am alive because God watches over me.
Verse 8 is the climax of Psalm packed with encouragement. God is ready to assist us at all times (1-2). He does not sleep or slumber as He watches over us (3-4). The elements of nature will not harm us (5-6).
Verse 8 has another beautiful meaning. According to Ellicott’s Commentary for English Readers, “Thy going out and thy coming in” is “A common Hebrew expression to denote the whole of life.”
In other words, God will preserve your life. You live because He allows you to. You can trust God to lead and guide you every day. His guardian angel will not leave your side. God will bless the work of your hands. You will leave with expectation and return with blessings.
Today, if you feel like you are having a tough day, remember, “The Lord will keep you from all harm; he will watch over your life” (7).
Thank you for having my back, Lord.
Thank you lord for always watching over me despite my sinful nature
