God Loves Growth

Daily Devotional – Sunday, February 18, 2024
but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus
2 Peter 3:18 (NKJV)

A farmer expects the seeds he plants to germinate and grow steadily until the time of reaping. A parent is overjoyed when her child takes the first step, utters the first word, and keeps growing. A teacher takes pride in the academic progression of the learner.

Progress Breeds Joy

If the crops are stunted, the child is diminutive, and the learner fails his tests, the farmer, the mother, and the teacher will be worried and frustrated. One wonders why there is no development yet all efforts have been expended to nurture growth.

God, too, loves to see His children growing spiritually and in other spheres of life. In the conclusion to his second epistle, Peter urges his readers, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus.” (2 Peter 3:18). Growth starts the moment we decide to be born again.

God Loves Growth

However, birth only makes sense when growth happens. God watches over us to see our progress in character transformation. When growth happens, there is a positive change in attitude, temperament, speech, and conduct. For example, through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit, a person with anger issues can gradually become a peaceful and patient individual.

The growth process is enhanced through a life of fervent prayer, Bible study, meditating on the word of God, and obeying His voice. As we interact with God and allow Him to reign over us, we gradually become like Him in character. God loves growth. Are you developing, or are you stunted?

Prayer
Dear Jesus, help me to grow in your grace and understanding.
