For the LORD will not cast off His people, nor will He forsake His inheritance.
Psalms 94:14 (NKJV)
One of the saddest stories I heard during recent prolonged drought and famine concerned abandoned children. The current head of the family was a ten year-old girl, taking care of her four younger siblings, the youngest one, only a year old.
God Will Not Cast Us Off
It happened that their parents had woken up early one day and left for an unknown place. Neighbours who were helping the deserted children said the parents had left because they could no longer take care of their children.
Even in the worst of situations, how could parent flee to seek greener pastures and leave their children to die to starvation? What happened to maternal instincts and paternal pride? Why would the two parents not have remained to face the challenges with their children?
The LORD Will not Abandon His Inheritance
Thankfully, believers have a different kind of parent. The psalmist describes this Father thus, “For the LORD will not cast off His people, nor will He forsake His inheritance.” (Psalms 94:14). Unlike earthly parents whose love can fade and end, God always remains with His people.
God loves us so much that he cannot abandon us, especially not when we are weak are vulnerable. Indeed, God pursues that sinner to woo her back home. That is the story of salvation – Jesus’ sojourn on earth and the salvation He secured for us at such a high price.
I Will Not Forget You
Prophet Isaiah echoes David’s confidence in God, saying, “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” (Isaiah 49:15). What beautiful imagery!
God loves us more than our earthly parents do. Even when we choose to walk away from Him (like the prodigal son did), the LORD awaits our return with unfathomable longing. Further, when troubles assail us, God assures us of His presence and help.
God Will Not Forsake You
Our parents, siblings, neighbours and fellow believers may abandon us but God stays by our side. Because God has not forsaken you, why should you give up on yourself? Whatever challenges you may be facing today, remember God will not forsake you.
