God’s Formula for Success

Daily Devotional: Saturday, January 30, 2021

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Joshua 1:8

Moses has rested. Joshua is to lead the children of Israel to the Promised Land. Although Joshua has been Moses’ assistant for long time, he feels inadequate. God steps in to encourage His servant and, in the process, reveals the secret that alone brings success to man.

In Numbers 23, for being men of faith, Joshua and Caleb become the only two people (from the multitude that was redeemed from Egypt) to enter Canaan. That must have been a great honour, but leading the Israelites across the Jordan was not an easy task.

Notice that in Joshua 1:6, 7, and 9, God repeats the words, “be strong and courageous”. God knows the task is frightening and Joshua needs motivation.

However, there is a condition that Joshua must meet. And here is the secret of Joshua’s and our success in all aspects of life. In verses 7 & 8, we read:

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

God reminds Joshua that prosperity will only result from meditating on and obeying the Book of the Law, which is the Word of God as revealed in the Bible. In John 16:13, God promises the gift of His Holy Spirit to guide us in understanding His word.

In other words, when we submit ourselves to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, prayerfully read the Word of God, and then practice what we learn, success will be our reward. There can be no other way. In a nutshell, obedience to God is the secret to spiritual and material success.

Prayer

Father, I want to prosper. Please help me to meditate on your word and to obey you in all my ways.
