Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
James 4:8 (NKJV)
A common fallacy among Christians is that God will do everything for us as long as we believe. This misconception may explain the existence of Christians who fail to work and expect God to meet their needs.
On a spiritual level, while God’s love is unconditional, human beings still have a role to play to benefit from God’s goodness. God has given us numerous promises on spiritual revival, all of which define our critical role.
Identifying the IFs in a Selection of God’s Promises
Let us examine some of these assurances:.
- “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14). God will forgive His people and heal the land IF they humble themselves, pray, seek Him and repent.
- “And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13). IF we long to find God and be at peace with Him, we must seek Him actively, diligently and wholeheartedly.
- Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. (James 4:8). Like the prodigal children we are, IF we go back home, God will run to meet, embrace and welcome us back home.
- “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” (Revelation 3:20). God will only become a transforming Presence in our lives IF we welcome Him in our hearts.
Our Critical Role in our Spiritual Revival
These and other verses demonstrate that we have a role to play in God’s effort to help us live piously on earth. God does not force the conscience. Rather, the Holy Spirit convicts us of our sins and persuades us to lead holy lives.
There can be no such thing as a passive Christian. Ours is an active profession of faith. As Jesus says in yet another promise, “IF anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me”. (Luke 9:23).
Which IFs have you not fulfilled? What is hindering your spiritual revival?
Lord Jesus, help me to do my part in my spiritual revival. I know You are always ready to do Your part.
