Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

Words have immense power. They can uplift or demolish, inspire or demoralize, bring about life or damage. Our key text talks of grace, salt, and fitting answers. What exactly does that mean for modern Christians?

Offering the Right Answer

In order to communicate with grace, we must model Christ’s kindness, tolerance, and love in our conversations. We need to practice kindness and humility even when we are correcting those in error. This is not to say that we avoid the truth or offer false praise.

Speaking with grace uplifts rather than condemns. Instead of passing judgment, it demonstrates love. Furthermore, it aims to comprehend rather than to prevail in a debate. Like Jesus, we should use communication to heal relationships and bring back to Christ those who have wandered away.

Grace, Salt and Fitting Answers

The apostle understands the impact our words carry in our mission of evangelizing the world. He reminds us that when our speech is “seasoned with salt,” we retain the truth of God’s Word. We also bring fairness and wisdom to discussions and make the Gospel appealing to others.

Think about the recent discussions you have had on social media, at work, and at home. Were your words salt-seasoned and full of grace? Did they exhibit the wisdom and love of Christ? Ask God to empower you to speak with grace, applying speech that preserves and flavours like salt and offering fitting answers to those you interact with.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, empower me so that my speech will always be with grace, seasoned with salt. I want to know how I ought to answer those I live and interact with.
