Guard Your Mind – Words Will Take Care of Themselves

Daily Devotional – Friday, July 30, 2021

For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

 Luke 6:45 (NKJV)

Mangoes come in several shapes, sizes and colours. Some are sweet. Others are not that delicious. If you are an experienced mango ‘eater’, you can tell the difference by looking at the mango tree.

Jesus said, “…a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.” (Luke 6:43). The Lord used this analogy to explain the link between human thought, character and speech.

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil” (Luke 6:45).

The Lord taught that people do not just speak. Utterances originate from thoughts. “For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45).

If you have pure thoughts, your words will be pure and vice versa. The mouth is like a computer monitor. It displays what the Central Processing Unit (CPU) – your mind – commands.

Solomon gave this important instruction, “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23).

Realizing, then, that your mind has profound influence on your character and speech, we must ask, “How can I guard my mind from corrupting and debasing thoughts?”

Paul gives this answer:

whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. (Philippians 4:8).

Father, help me guard my mind from ungodly thoughts. I want my character and speech to make you proud.
