A time to keep silence and a time to speak.
Ecclesiastes 3:7 (NKJV)
I have noticed that age and silence are directly proportional. As I grow older, I am learning to speak less and listen more. I think it is because of my many experiences that exemplify the importance of silence.
A Time to Keep Silence
For example, when two parties are quarreling and shouting at the top of their voices, none listens to the other. The more they talk, the more fuel their pour on the conflict. However, when one party keeps quiet, the other one cools down. The process of conflict resolution begins.
Knowing when to speak and when to keep quiet is a virtue that augurs well for our emotional and spiritual development. Solomon says there is, “A time to keep silence and a time to speak.” (Ecclesiastes 3:7).
He Who Restrains His Lips is Wise
One way to exercise this principle is in controlling anger. James counsels, “let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” (James 1:19-20).
Similarly, whether we are prudent or irrational is evident from the way we use our words. Here is Solomon again: “In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise.” (Proverbs 10:19).
Harness the Power of Silence
In moments of silence, we learn to listen carefully. When we stop to give others our ears, we become considerate and empathetic. When we restrain our lips from speaking before thinking, we avoid breaking relationships within and outside the family.
There will be moments when we will have to speak. Nevertheless, there will be times when we will have to retreat, reflect and plan before acting. There is power in knowing when to speak and when to keep silent.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me when to keep silent and when to speak.
