How Counsel and Instructions Spare Us Dire Consequences

Daily Devotional – Saturday, October 22, 2022
Listen to counsel and receive instruction that you may be wise in your latter days.
Proverbs 19:20 (NKJV)

A Swahili saying goes, “Majuto ni mjukuu, huja baadae.” Loosely translated, it means that regrets are similar to grandchildren because they come later in life. In essence, by the time we start regretting, it is too late to change our situations.

Listen to Counsel and Receive Instruction

Have you noticed that we discuss regrets vis-à-vis counsel or information we had access to but which we chose to ignore? While we cannot see tomorrow, there are people who have lived through our ‘tomorrow’. We need their insights and counsel if we are to enjoy life.

Listen to King Solomon’s take: “Listen to counsel and receive instruction that you may be wise in your latter days.” (Proverbs 19:20). There is a close link between listening to and acting on advice and the quality of your life in future.

Counselors and Instructors Everywhere

In His unfathomable wisdom, God places counsel for us in various formats. For example, good parents and guardians instruct, guide and warn their offspring. They want their children to have happier and not miserable lives.

Within the body of believers, God place ministers, elders, teachers and other brethren, from whom we can obtain godly instructions and counsel. Because they have walked with God and experienced highs and lows, they can save us the consequences of wrong decision-making.

Counsel, Instructions and Dire Consequences

At an even higher level, God has given us His Holy Word, which “is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16). The Bible contains advice that makes us wise now and in later years.

When we heed the instructions of Divine Counselor (Isaiah 9:6) we will have the guidance we need to make prudent decisions. Otherwise, we will reap the dire consequences of ignoring counsel and instructions.

Prayer
Loving Father, teach me to listen to counsel and receive instruction that I may be wise in my latter days.
