How Forgiving Makes Us Free

Daily Devotional: Monday, April 22, 2024
For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
Matthew 6:14 (NKJV)

Although it is a fundamental tenet of Christianity, forgiveness is also frequently one of the hardest things to practice in daily life. Forgiveness is fundamentally an inside, highly personal process that deepens our relationships with God and people. Jesus says, “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” (Matthew 6:14).

Liberation Through Pardoning

We come upon the paradox of freedom on the path of forgiveness. At first, we might think that clinging to our complaints gives us the upper hand over people who have harmed us. However, in actuality, our resentment and wrath frequently imprison us.

Jesus invites us to escape this pattern of servitude in his parables about forgiveness. He does not urge us to pardon because it is convenient or because the victim merits it. Rather, He urges us to forgive because He is aware of the heart-changing potential it has.

By making the decision to forgive, we set ourselves free from the bonds of anger and bitterness. We make room in our hearts for healing to occur. In order to be forgiven, we must accept our hurt and decide to let go of our desire for vengeance or retaliation.

How Forgiving Makes Us Free

We reflect God’s unwavering love and grace upon ourselves when we extend forgiveness. We can only fully comprehend God’s mercy and find healing in our connection with Him when we forgive.

May we never forget that forgiveness is a sign of immense strength rather than weakness. And when we do that, we’ll find a liberation that sets us free from the bonds of refusal to forgive and usher in an abundant life. Indeed, forgiving makes us free.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me forgive others so that I may enjoy the freedom that comes with this divine act.
