How to Escape a Lion Attack

Daily Devotional – Thursday, March 30, 2023
Be sober
be vigilant, because your adversary, the devil, walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV)

In the African Savannah, herders must take precautions to prevent lions from devouring their flocks. A common strategy is to build a thick wall of thorns around the sheep’s, goats’, or cattle’s enclosure. In addition, shepherds light fires near the animal pens and keep vigil the whole night.

Avoiding a Lion Attack

Any animal that ventures out of the enclosure risks certain death from lions and other predators. In some cases, lions use their loud and scary roars to frighten domestic animals out of the safety of the overnight shelter. Frightened animals can jump out of the pen only to land on the laps of the lions.

Whenever there is wild or domestic prey in the vicinity, hungry lions prowl at night. They target the careless animal that ventures into the lonely, cold night unprotected. The only way to escape a lion attack is to shelter in a secure place. Thus, the goat, sheep, and cattle must trust the shepherd for their survival.

The Devil Prowls Like a Lion

Apostle Peter must have had the image of a marauding lion in mind when he wrote, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary, the devil, walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8). What a graphic depiction of the malicious and dangerous Satan!

The moment you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, Satan places you on his radar. He knows he cannot reach you when you are under the protection of Jesus. The devil uses threats of physical harm and trickery to force or entice you away from Jesus before destroying you.

How to Escape a Lion Attack

How can you avoid a lion attack? Peter answers, “Resist him, steadfast in the faith.” (1 Peter 5:9). This can only happen when you are in Christ’s secure fold. Cooperate with Christ for your safety and salvation (Philippians 2:12) by reading and meditating on God’s word regularly, living a life of prayer, and practicing the teachings of Jesus.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, in You I hide, because only under Your care and protection will I be safe from the vicious and subtle attacks of the roaring lion—the devil.
