How to Escape the Lord’s Wrath

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, February 6, 2024
Seek the LORD, all you meek of the earth.
Zephaniah 2:3 (NKJV)

The concept of the ‘Day of the Lord’ pervades scripture. In the Old Testament, this is the day the Lord judges others and takes vengeance on His enemies and the oppressors of His people. Prophet Zephaniah revealed the secret for escaping the Lord’s wrath as: “Seek the LORD, all you meek of the earth, who have upheld His justice. Seek righteousness; seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of the LORD’s anger.” (Zephaniah 2:3).

Hidden from the Lord’s Anger

The people God will save are meek, a quality Jesus possessed and which He asked His followers to adopt (Matthew 11:29). Humility is one of the most underrated character traits. Meekness is not weakness but an acknowledgment of the sovereignty and leadership of God in our lives.

Meek people also practice justice. We live in a world where unfairness, impartiality, and injustice prevail. The high and mighty and the rich get what they want by perverting justice. The widowed, the orphaned, the weak, and the poor lose their property, rights, and dignity because they cannot pay those who make decisions.

How to Escape the Lord’s Wrath

To the meek and those who champion justice and fairness, God says, “Seek the LORD, seek righteousness, and seek humility.” These noble character traits entail having an active and saving relationship with God and loving, respecting, and being kind to fellow human beings.

Ahead of us is the ultimate day of the Lord’s anger, when Christ’s appearing shall destroy the wicked, even as the saints will receive vindication. To prepare for that day, therefore, we must ask God to make us humble and just while we pursue Him and the righteousness that only He can give us. Only by becoming like Jesus shall we escape the Lord’s wrath.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, as I prepare for your second coming, I want to learn from you, for you are meek and lowly in heart.
