Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
1 Timothy 6:12 (NKJV)
As Christians, we are supposed to fight on the battlefield of life, but with faith rather than worldly weapons. Timothy is urged by the apostle Paul to fight the good fight in order to fulfill his calling, not because he wanted to merit salvation. This verse serves as a reminder that having faith necessitates tenacity, bravery, and an unshakeable faith in God.
Lay Hold of Eternal Life
Our everyday struggles can manifest as uncertainties, anxieties, temptations, or adversity. We must remain steadfast, rooted in God’s promises, despite the enemy’s attempts to demoralize and divert us. The good fight of faith is about allowing the Holy Spirit to live in us, depending on God’s power as we engage in prayer and study the scripture. It is not about what we can do with human strength.
Timothy is likewise instructed by Paul to “lay hold of eternal life.” This entails living with eternity in mind and fully enjoying our new identity in Jesus. Our hardships are fleeting, but the benefits last a lifetime. Knowing that God will reward us for trusting in Him gives us the fortitude to persevere when we keep our eyes on Jesus.
How to Fight the Good Fight
Are you having difficulties with your religion right now? How can you rely on God’s might rather than your own? What actions can you take to securely maintain your everlasting life in Christ? Fight the good fight, for God is with you and will reward you.
Prayer
Almighty God, help me to fight the good fight and to lay hold of the eternal life You have assured me.
