You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.
John 15:16 (NKJV)
When I spotted a pumpkin seedling in my garden, I was elated. I felt like had struck a jackpot. My dream of growing pumpkins had materialized without my intervention. I started imagining large healthy fruits in a few months’ time.
God Supplies Everything We Need
I dedicated an entire morning to the work of weeding, securing the plant and manuring it. Now it had a whole section of the garden to itself. From that time, I zealously watched over and nurtured the plant, expecting a bountiful harvest.
My efforts to ensure the pumpkin plant was fruitful mirrors what Christ does with believers, albeit in a different realm. Jesus says, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5).
Whatever You Ask in My Name
In essence, when we are born again, Christ begins the process of fruit-bearing in us. He nurtures us by filling us with the Holy Spirit, providing our materials needs and placing us in a family of believers. In addition, He promises to be with us always and everywhere.
Now that God has done His part, He reminds us our obligations and in the process tells us how to get everything we want. “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.” (John 15:16).
How to Get Everything You Want
In essence, if we remain in Christ, we will bear fruit continually. That is why He called and chose us. Consequently, when we ask God for anything according to His will, He will give it to us. In this context, fruit-bearing and answered prayers are two sides of a coin.
Now we have the secret. If we lack any good thing, there are two possible reasons. One, we do not pray in the Father’s Name (according to His will). Two, we are not bearing fruit (not obeying and trusting God). What do you need? Obey God and ear fruit.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to bear fruit that You might give me my desires, which are according to Your will.
