Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.
Proverbs 12:25 (KJV)
When I returned to my place of work after a long break, I found my flowers on the verge of death. I quickly poured water into the flowerpots, hoping I would salvage some of the plants. The following morning, the flowers had ‘resurrected’.
According to King Solomon, the human heart can undergo an experience like that of my water thirsty flowers. He says, “Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.” (Proverbs 12:25).
Do Not Worry About Tomorrow
‘Heaviness’ refers to worry or anxiety. Because of the cares of this life and numerous fears, worry weighs down on us. Like wilting plants, we walk with our heads and bodies bent forwards and downwards. Our countenances betray the troubles in our hearts.
We can lighten our hearts if we heed Christ’s teaching, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (Matthew 6:34, NKJV).
How to Gladden Stooping Hearts
In contrast, like drops of water to thirsty plants after a drought, words of encouragement rejuvenate and give hope to despondent souls. The word of God urges us, “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works.” (Hebrews 10:24, NKJV).
As we experience divine peace that eliminates worry, God expects us to be His agents in giving hope to others. Look around and you will find a person whose situation could be lighter if you offered her genuine godly encouragement. Make a stooping heart glad today.
Prayer
Almighty Father, teach me to cast all my cares on you and to encourage others to do the same.
