How to Keep Christ’s Fire Burning

A fire shall always be burning on the altar; it shall never go out.

Leviticus 6:13 (NKJV)

The statement, ‘Keep the fire burning’ has varying meanings. At the very basic level, though, it means to continue doing something good or to follow a certain course of action faithfully.

Now, do you know that this statement has its roots in scripture? Here is Leviticus 6:13, “A fire shall always be burning on the altar; it shall never go out.”

The children of Israel were to offer burnt offerings to God. These offerings symbolized man’s reconciliation with God. They also stood for man’s total submission, dedication and commitment to the Almighty.

The fire that was to consume this sacrifice was to burn perpetually.

“And the fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not be put out. And the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order on it.” (Leviticus 6:12).

As long as human beings needed to be reconciled to God, there would be a need for burnt offerings. To facilitate the process, the fire on the altar of burnt offering was to burn continuously.

Here is the lesson. A Christian should be devoted to God 24/7. Not only should we offer our bodies as living sacrifices to God (Romans 12:1), we should also serve God and our fellowmen throughout our lives.

The only way to achieve this ideal is to follow Paul’s counsel, “Do not quench the Spirit.” (1 Thessalonians 5:19). When God fills you, your spiritual fire will never go out.

Christianity is a full-time calling. Raise Christ’s flag high every day of your life.  

Father, may the fire of Your Holy Spirit never go out in me.
