Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgments which I teach you to observe, that you may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers is giving you.
Deuteronomy 4:1 (NKJV)
The children of Israel are in the wilderness on the way to Egypt. Moses, their great leader makes his final submissions before exiting the stage. In Deuteronomy chapter 4, he begins by revealing to them how to live longer and productively.
Listen, Obey and Live
The secret is in Deuteronomy 4:1, which states, “Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgments which I teach you to observe, that you may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers is giving you.”
Try reading the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy and you will be tempted to skip some parts because of the many laws, rules and regulations God gives the children of Jacob.
How to Reach and Enjoy Being in Canaan
It is possible that many of these people had become tired of listening to and obeying these requirements. Probably, they felt God was burdening them with unnecessary warnings, instructions and guidelines.
In contrast, Moses taught his followers that by listening to and obeying the voice of God, they would guarantee themselves long life to reach Canaan and enjoy the inheritance awaiting them. In essence, the requirements they considered burdensome were their ticket longevity, joy and prosperity.
No Shortcuts
God has not changed the secret for humanity in this century. We may resort to medical and cosmetic methods to achieve youthfulness, long life and happiness but these approaches are not sustainable, effective or sufficient.
Only by obeying God unquestioningly will we attain a fulfilling holistic existence. Like some the Israelites, we may feel that the laws of God are burdensome and restrictive for no good reason but there can be no shortcut where God has given such clear instructions.
How to Live Longer and Productively
The promises of God are conditional to our obedience. He desires to give us happy and industrious lives today and in eternity but He will not force us to receive His blessings. If we want to live longer and productively, we must choose to listen to and obey God.
Today, assess your life. Is it possible that your thoughts, attitudes, beliefs, words and conduct are in conflict with the moral and physical principles of God? Determine, by God’s grace, that you will live longer and productively by obeying God’s voice wholeheartedly.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, teach me to listen to Your voice and to obey You that I may live longer to enjoy the blessings of this life and those of eternity.
