Therefore, let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.
1 Corinthians 10:12 (NKJV)
Today’s key text warns us against spiritual overconfidence. Paul draws attention to Israel’s history, when many people turned to idolatry and sin in spite of seeing God’s magnificent works. This serves as a caution to believers that vulnerability might result from spiritual pride
Take Heed Lest You Fall
Maybe we have been regular in our ministry work, Bible studies, or prayers. Paul warns against imagining we are impervious to temptation or depending solely on our own strength, even though these are admirable habits. When we believe we have attained spiritual purity, spiritual complacency sets in.
Walking in dread while acknowledging our reliance on God’s grace is what it means to be humble. We are all prone to falling, regardless of how mature our faith is. Thankfully, when we are tempted, God offers an escape route (read 1 Corinthians 10:13). His strength, not ours, is what gives victory over temptations.
How to Overcome Spiritual Pride
It is possible to become complacent and spiritually proud yet remain unaware of your situation. In such a situation, surround yourself with Christians who can push you. Mutual support and accountability keep us rooted in our relationship with Christ.
Open your heart to God and allow Him to change you. Also, recognizing your everyday need for Him protects you from becoming overconfident. In addition, study the Bible on a regular basis to stay in line with God. In times of weakness, rely on the Word of God and His grace to overcome spiritual pride.
Prayer
Dear God, empower me to overcome spiritual pride and complacency. Help me to always remember that only be relying on you can I become victorious over temptation and sin.
