How to Practice Gentleness

Daily Devotional – Friday, January 17, 2025
A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Proverbs 15:1(NKJV)

Have you ever been in the midst of a contentious discussion where tension was rising and emotions were running high? Words can be bridges or weapons in those situations. The important text for today serves as a reminder of the effectiveness of a tactful approach in defusing tensions and advancing peace.

A Soft Answer Turns Away Wrath

We should learn gentleness from God. Even in the midst of hatred, Jesus demonstrated gentleness and humility during His earthly ministry. He showed us how to interact with people in a loving manner by responding gracefully to accusations, mockery, and misunderstandings.

Being gentle is strength in moderation, not weakness. Responding kindly requires significantly more courage than reacting angrily. A soft answer calms a wound, whereas harsh words increase tension and build walls between people. They disarm defensiveness, promote understanding, and pave the way for peacemaking.

How to Practice Gentleness

When confronted with conflict, pause, take a deep breath, and ask God for wisdom. Make an effort to comprehend the feelings that underlie someone’s words or behavior. Being gentle doesn’t imply avoiding difficult talks; rather, it means approaching problems with an attitude that aims to uplift rather than depress.

Keep in mind that you have the ability to heal and provide peace with your words. Make the gentle choice, and observe how God uses your obedience to change people’s attitudes and circumstances for His glory. God gives us the ability to say words that bring life and healing even in trying circumstances. That is how you practice gentleness.

Prayer
Almighty God, please assist me to avoid reacting angrily and tap into the power of gentleness.
