How to Stay Strong During Life’s Dry Seasons

Daily Devotional – Friday, June 26, 2026
For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters which spreads out its roots by the river and will not fear when heat comes, but its leaf will be green and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.
Jeremiah 17:8 (NKJV)

Jeremiah’s audience understood the effects of drought. These people depended on seasonal rains, and a long dry spell could wipe out crops, kill livestock, and destroy livelihoods. Therefore, Jeremiah’s picture was stark. He talked about a tree by a stream, its roots growing steadily toward a reliable source of water. Whatever else might be parched by the heat, the tree would continue to flourish, drawing life from far deeper than the surface.

How to Find Peace in Uncertain Times

What makes this image so powerful is that the roots are hidden. No one passing the tree would stop to admire them. They would see the green leaf and the healthy bough. Yet those visible signs of life exist because of something taking place underground. The roots have grown steadily in the right direction. They have reached a source capable of sustaining the tree when conditions become difficult.

That is why Jeremiah’s words are so realistic. He does not say the heat will never come. He does not promise that those who trust God will be spared every hardship. The heat comes. The drought comes. The difference is that the tree is prepared for it. Long before the difficult season arrived, it had already established a connection to the river.

Many of us spend a great deal of time asking God to remove the heat from our lives. We pray for easier circumstances, quicker solutions, and smoother roads. There is nothing wrong with those prayers. Yet God often works in another way. Instead of removing every challenge, He deepens our roots. Through His Word, through prayer, and through daily dependence on Him, He prepares us for seasons we cannot yet see.

How to Stay Strong During Life’s Dry Seasons

Jeremiah’s tree picture stays green and continues to bear fruit. Not because the season is easy, but because the source is reliable. So it is with every believer who learns to trust God deeply. His faithfulness is hotter than the heat, stronger than the drought and good enough for whatever season is ahead.

Perhaps you are living through a year of drought right now. Maybe it is financial pressure, family concerns, disappointment, or uncertainty about the future. This is a quiet reassurance: your peace need not rise and fall with your circumstances. When your life is rooted in the Lord, you have access to a never-ending source. The drought may affect the landscape around you, but it doesn’t have to dictate what happens inside you.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to be rooted in You to be strong, secure and fruitful in every season of life.
