Humility—The Unorthodox Path to Exaltation

Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.
1 Peter 5:6 (NKJV)

The virtue of humility is not something we are born with. The thought of submitting to God’s strong hand can seem contradictory in a society that promotes self-promotion and independence. However, Peter reminds us in today’s guiding text that the path to divine exaltation is through humility.

Humble Yourselves Under the Mighty Hand of God

Recognizing our need for God’s grace, our lack of control, and the fact that His methods are superior to our own is what it means to humble ourselves. It necessitates surrender—giving Him our pride, goals, and fears. Our key text promises that God will raise us up when the time is right. Although it might not occur as planned or at the time we anticipate, God’s timing is flawless.

Jesus is the perfect epitome of humility. He humbled Himself like a mere slave, and was obedient all the way until He gave His life on the cross of Calvary. Hence, God exalted the name of Jesus above other names, following the humility of Jesus. We can be sure that God will act in our lives for both His glory and our benefit when we follow Christ’s example and put our trust in Him.

Which areas of your life need to be brought under the authority of God? In your everyday walk with Christ, how can you demonstrate humility? Do you have faith that God will work out His plans for your life in His own time? Never forget that exaltation comes only through humility.

Father in heaven, empower me to be humble as Jesus was. Always remind me that the path to exaltation is through humility.
