I am going away and coming back to you.
John 14:28 (NKJV)
As a little boy, I disliked being separated from my mother. It was especially hard for me when she would be gone for many days. One thing, however, kept me hopeful. Before embarking on such journeys, she would always promise, “I will come back.”
The Joyous Homecoming
Her absence would pain me but her assurance would lessen the agony. Every day, I would count the days remaining for her to return. I would also dream of the goodies she would bring on her return and this would increase my longing for that day.
Finally, the day of mother’s return would arrive. I was sure she would not fail to come. Of course, that was the day to put on the best behaviour and dress well. Her arrival was always a mini-party, replete with hugs, kisses, tears and gifts. It was continually evident that she, too, had missed her offspring.
Wait for Me
My childhood memories remind me of another important parent I am waiting for. More than two thousand years ago, He told His then and future disciples, “I am going away and coming back to you.” (John 14:28).
What a sad day it was for the believers! Jesus had been their constant companion for more than three years. He had walked with them, taught them, healed them, fed them and comforted them. How would they survive without Him?
I will Come Again
His promises, though, was comforting:
“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14:1-3).
I am Coming Back
Jesus longs to be reunited with His faithful children. Like a mother who has missed her children, Christ wants to return and take His offspring to heaven with Him. He reiterates, “…behold, I am coming quickly…” (Revelation 22:12). Will the LORD find His children waiting happily to receive Him?
Do you wake up every day longing for Jesus to return? Are you, “looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ?” (Titus 2:13). How well prepared are you to receive Him when He appears in the clouds? Does the promise, “I am coming back” fill you with joy or dread?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, continue preparing me, and fill me with longing for Your return.

Quite encouraging
Welcome, Omondi. Keep it here every day.
I can relate with your childhood analogy, we would wait for parents even on the road from where we thought they’d appear.. sometimes see headlights of motors and would say, this is mum on a bike, we’d be disappointed if the motorbike went past us with someone else. We’d not only wait but also anticipate gifts.
Just like Christ went we have waited long for his return and still we wait,we believe He will come and come with gifts as well..”..my reward is with me” Revelation 22:12.
May God help me be faithful as i wait, for He who promised will come for sure soon will return.
Wow! I love how you narrate your experience.
