Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’
Joel 3:10 (NKJV)
In 1745, William Williams wrote one of the most inspiring hymns you will ever come across, “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah”.
The song borrows heavily from the journey of the Israelites from Egypt to Canaan. We learn that God watches over us and delivers us from all sorts of troubles as we journey home.
The first stanza has these powerful lyrics: I am weak, but Thou art mighty, / Hold me with Thy powerful hand.
Williams is aware of his weakness and helplessness. He reaches out for God’s powerful hand.
He reminds me of God’s message to the Israelites through Prophet Joel, “Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears” (Joel 3:10).
God wanted His people to come out and face the enemy. Any weapon would work, including farm tools like pruning hooks.
However, because many Israelites were not trained soldiers, God encouraged them, “Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’ ” (Joel 3:10). Yes, they were weak, but they were to confess their strength in the God who had called them to fight the enemy.
How many of us today would do with such a confession today? Like Williams we admit we are weak and in need of God’s powerful Hand. Once we hold that Almighty Hand, we confess, ‘I am strong’ and go out to face the day with confidence.
Satan cannot defeat the person who, recognizing his helplessness without Christ, reaches out for divine help, and confesses confidently, ‘I am strong’. Will you be that person today? Whatever life brings your way today remember you are strong in Christ.
Loving Father, acknowledging my helplessness without you, I reach out to you and confess, ‘I am strong.’
