If Jesus Returned On A Saturday…

Daily Devotional, Saturday, April 24, 2021

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?

Luke 6:46 (NIV)

On a visit to my barber, I listened to an interesting discussion on the discrepancy between Christian confession and practice. Apparently, each of seven individuals in the beauty salon had something to say about the topic. I sample three most significant comments here.

“Why do more Christians attend secular entertainment events than those who grace evangelistic meetings?”

“In many professed Christian homes, only 3% of the programs watched and music enjoyed are Christian. Secular content rules.”

“If Jesus came on a Saturday, only a few people would go to heaven. The sins committed on Saturday can scare the devil himself.”

I could not tell whether these ‘preachers’ were mocking Christians or they were Christians who were frustrated by “part-time” believers.

Jesus once told His followers, “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46 -NIV). These professed followers of Jesus led totally different lives compared to Gospel teachings.

The confessions of their mouths were invalidated by their actions. Their ungodly example must have kept some prospective believers away from Christ.

Paul did not spare such people. “They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good” (Titus 1:16 – NIV).

Jesus expects us to be ready for His return every day of the week. It does not matter whether Christ will come on a Saturday, a Sunday or a Friday. Christianity is a 24/7/365 affair.

James urges us, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22).

Jesus, help me to align my Christian confession with my actions.
