However, there need be no accounting made with them of the money delivered into their hand, because they deal faithfully.
2 Kings 22:7 (NKJV)
King Josiah was a reformist. He came to power at the tender age of eight years but God gave Him wisdom to discern good from evil. In particular, Josiah was keen to restore the true worship of Jehovah and to do away with idol worship. To accomplish His mission, the king needed impeccable stewardship among his helpers.
Managing the Lord’s Work
By the time the king was eighteen years-old, he started renovating the Jerusalem temple. He directed the high priest on how to facilitate the work using the offerings and donations of God’s people.
Concerning the money, Josiah instructed:
And let them deliver it into the hand of those doing the work, who are the overseers in the house of the LORD; let them give it to those who are in the house of the LORD doing the work, to repair the damages of the house— to carpenters and builders and masons—and to buy timber and hewn stone to repair the house. (2 Kings 22:5-6).
There Need Be No Accounting
Normally, those who handle money are expected to account for it on demand or at the end of the project. The king, however, had a different opinion of the artisans who were carrying out the critical work in the temple.
He stated, “However there need be no accounting made with them of the money delivered into their hand, because they deal faithfully.” (2 Kings 22:7). What a powerful vote of confidence! The king had a so much faith in these stewards that it was not necessary for them to prepare a financial report after the work.
Impeccable Stewardship
We are stewards of God’s property. Does God have similar confidence in us? Are we the kind of people that can work under little or no supervision, yet deliver assigned targets? If you are employed, can your supervisors use Josiah’s words to endorse your work?
Are you an impeccable steward? Paul reminds us, “… it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.” (1 Corinthians 4:2). Examine yourself and see where you are failing in your stewardship. Ask God to make you a faultless manager of time, money, health, family and other aspects of stewardship.
