In Search of Eternal Life

Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Deep down in the hearts of all human beings is a desire to live beyond their current existence. I recently watched a video of the frozen bodies of famous people, preserved with the hope that a cure for death will be found and they will get a second chance at life. The same thinking must have informed the embalming of Egyptian kings and their burial in coffins of gold.

What Shall I Do to Inherit Eternal Life?

The quest for eternal life was alive in the days of Christ, too. The rich young ruler came to Jesus and asked, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” (Luke 18:18). He lived comfortably, but he wanted assurance that he would transit to the next world.

All of us—scientists, pharaohs, and the rich alike—are right. There is eternal life. What we do not agree about is how to attain it. Thankfully, Jesus did not leave us in darkness. He said, “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3).

In Search of Eternal Life

Eternal life is believing that Jesus Christ died your death so that you might live His life. Everlasting life will not emanate from a formula created in a laboratory by mortal human beings, or by boarding a space shuttle and starting life anew on a far-off planet.
