Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Matthew 7:24 (NIV)
n a stormy night, a building under construction came tumbling down. Several workers were seriously injured. The owner not only incurred a massive financial loss, he also ended up in jail.
Investigations revealed the proprietor had ignored warnings by architects and engineers not to build on the landslide-prone area. The foundation could not support the weight of the structure.
A Wise Man Builds of a Rock
Foundations are critical in spiritual matters too. Jesus’ narrated the parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders to illustrate the unbreakable link between hearing God’s word and practicing it.
One man builds on sandy soil. A strong storm sweeps away the building because it has a shaky foundation. Conversely, another one builds on a rock. The powerful storm leaves the house intact because it has a strong foundation.
“Therefore,” Jesus said, “everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24).
Not Everyone Who Calls Me, ‘Lord, Lord.’
This statement mirrors verse 21: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
If you listen to and obey Jesus, your faith is on the right foundation. However, if you are a Christian by name only, your faith is on shaky ground. It will not withstand trials and tribulations. Worse still, Jesus will reject you.
Is your spiritual foundation stable or shaky? The secret is in obeying Jesus without question.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to build my faith on You; my Rock.
