It Is Well

Say to the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.

Sometimes the burden feels too much to bear when facing life’s challenges. These are the times when our faith is truly put to the test. The hymn “It Is Well with My Soul” encapsulates one of the most poignant affirmations of unshakeable faith in the face of suffering. This hymn, which was penned by Horatio Spafford following a string of unfortunate incidents, speaks to everyone who has experienced adversity.

Say to the Righteous
Prolific attorney and devoted Christian Horatio Spafford suffered a great deal of personal sorrow. He set sail to be with his devastated wife after losing all four of his daughters in a shipwreck. He wrote the verses of this hymn as his ship passed over the scene of the terrible catastrophe. The phrase “It is well with my soul” affirms faith in the face of suffering rather than downplaying it.

Saying, “It is well,” is a significant assertion. We are not saying that life is easy or that we don’t face challenges. Rather, we are reaffirming that our faith in Christ keeps our inner serenity and hope intact. This serenity results from a strong faith in God’s omnipotence and love rather than from a lack of difficulties.

It Is Well

Consider the places in your life where you most need God’s peace as you go about your day. Are there times when you find it difficult to get enough sleep? Let the statement “It is well with my soul” become ingrained in your thoughts and behavior. Have faith that God’s peace will be your mooring no matter what comes.

Lord Jesus, thank You because even when circumstances appear to be out of control, You have assured me that it is well with my soul.
