It Shall Be Well

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, June 22, 2021

Though a sinner does evil a hundred times, and his days are prolonged, yet I surely know that it will be well with those who fear God…

Ecclesiastes 8:12 (NKJV)

Joseph James DeAngelo Jr. was a serial killer, rapist and burglar. Between 1973 and 1986, this police officer committed multiple crimes in California.

Using DNA evidence, police finally traced and arrested the 71 year-old DeAngelo on April 24, 2018. On August 21, 2020, 47 years after his crime, DeAngelo got a life sentence.

I watched a video of the old frail man pleading guilty to every sentence and realized that the wicked will never enjoy the proceeds of crime forever.

The Bible says, “Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.” Ecclesiastes 8:11 (NKJV). When justice and punishment delay, impunity reigns.

God issues a warning to the wicked and encouragement to the righteous. “Though a sinner does evil a hundred times, and his days are prolonged, yet I surely know that it will be well with those who fear God...” Ecclesiastes 8:12.

Evil may seem to reign for some time, but, eventually, righteousness will prevail. It shall be well with those who obey God and remain faithful to His commandments. God will reward virtue in this world and in the one to come.

When you see wicked people prosper, do not envy them (read Psalm 73). Their end is coming soon. Do not join them in their evil. God’s justice may seem to delay, but eventually God will act.

It shall be well with you.

Father, teach me to love righteousness and reject evil, even when the latter seems to succeed.
