And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
Luke 17:13 (NKJV)
Jesus is walking through the border of Samaria and Galilee. The residents of these two regions and ethnic communities are sworn enemies. However, they have one thing in common: their treatment of lepers.
No one dares come near lepers. Among these outcasts, though, these is no ethnicity. Societal stigma unites them. They also harbor hope that God will heal them and give them an opportunity to lead normal lives.
Jesus, Master, Have Mercy On Us!
They have heard about Jesus, the Rabbi who heals and performs mighty miracles. On this day, He is in the village in whose outskirts the lepers wallow in misery. They will try their luck. Perhaps He will give them a new lease of life.
It is possible they have rehearsed their presentation several times. Since they cannot come near Jesus, they stand a distance away and shout in unison, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” (Luke 17:13).
The lepers do not fear how the crowd will react. Nothing will come between them and Jesus. The Lord considers their faith and heals them. Finally, they are no longer outcasts, thanks to practical faith in Jesus.
The Merciful Saviour Who Hears Our Cries
Like the lepers, we too, suffer from a form of leprosy called sin. People around us make us aware of our sinful natures often though criticism and stigmatization. Instead of helping us, they slander us. Holier-than-thou Christians may convincing us we are beyond pardon.
Between us and the forgiveness and healing we seek are formidable obstacles. However, irrespective of how far sin has driven us from Jesus, we can shout, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” Jesus answers this prayer instantly.
Wherever you are today, notwithstanding of the pit Satan has thrown you into, raise your voice to Jesus. He will come running to save you.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I need you more than ever today. Intervene in my situation because without You, I am lost.
