Jesus Rules the Raging Sea

Daily Devotional – Thursday, August 18, 2022
You rule the raging of the sea. When its waves rise, You still them.
Psalm 89:9 (NKJV)

he sea symbolizes turbulence, which has the potential to destroy lives and property. The Psalmist acknowledges that only God can perform this role, saying, “You rule the raging of the sea. When its waves rise, You still them.” (Psalms 89:9).

When a tempest engulfed the boat the disciples and their Master were sailing in, they disciples panicked. They wondered why Jesus was sleeping peacefully in the stern. They asked Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” (Mark 4:38).

Jesus Rules the Raging Sea

In response, Jesus “…arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.”” (Verses 39-40). Suddenly, tranquility returned. They marveled, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!” (Verse 41).

The God who calms the angry waves of a physical sea also deals decisively with storms of sin in our lives. He pacifies gales of pride, addictions, “sexual immorality, impurity and decadence, idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness and orgies.” (Galatians 5:19:21).

The Lord Stills the Waves

Those who allow Jesus to rule their raging seas of sin receive unfathomable gifts from heaven such as, “…love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23).

While the Master loves you with everlasting love, He wants you to acknowledge that you need Him to calm the storms of sin in your life. Remember, without Him you can do nothing. Call Jesus today and let Him rule your raging sea.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, come into my life today and still my storms of sin.
