And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
John 8:32 (NKJV)
A couple of journalists had fled their dictatorial country into the neighboring nation. In their land of refuge, they discovered freedom and a superior quality of life they had never imagined were possible.
The reporters decided to help their compatriots to escape their militarized environment into a life of freedom and immense possibilities. The exiled scribes established a radio station to broadcast across the border.
The aim was to sensitize their oppressed compatriots on the need to free themselves from the dictatorial regime. Information is power. It raises awareness and engenders the desire to fulfill one’s potential in life.
The Truth Shall Make You Free
Jesus knew the power of information in emancipating people. However, His weapon was not just information. It was the truth. This is what He told Jews, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32).
To understand the type of slavery the Jews and all humanity were in, Jesus added, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin… Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” (John 8:34-36).
Slaves to Sin
Like the people whose land was under dictatorial rule, we are slaves of sin. Sometimes we are so much used to our slavery that we think it is normal to suffer under sin. We lack the power to extricate ourselves from the shackles of sin.
Only by knowing the truth can we be freed from our bondage to sin. Interestingly, the truth Jesus is talking about is not a concept or theory. It is a Person. It is Jesus Himself as revealed in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
Who Will Deliver Me From this Body of Death?
In our struggle with sin, we normally reach a point of desperation. We know we are sinning. We want to stop sinning, but we keep rebelling against God. We cry out in anguish, “O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Romans 7:24).
That is when you need Jesus, the Truth, to set you free. As Paul observes, “I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:25). It is only by knowing and accepting Jesus Christ that we can be set free from bondage to sin.
That They May Have Life More Abundantly
With Christ as your personal Saviour, you will live free of condemnation (Romans 8:1). You will have a fulfilling life because Jesus promises, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10).
If the guilt of unconfessed sin is weighing you down, call upon Jesus, the Truth. He will pardon you and set you free. Without Jesus, you cannot enjoy real lasting freedom.
Lord Jesus, I want to know You, the Truth. Please set me free from bondage to sin and guilt. Give me an abundant, godly life.
1st John 5..Overcoming the World through Knowing Jesus Christ and Accepting him as Savior also leads us to Eternal life🙏
Amen,Chairman. Salvation in its broadest sense means being freed from the power of sin.
