Laugh Your Way to Good Health

Daily Devotional: Tuesday, April 27, 2021

A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.

Proverbs 17:22 (NKJV)

Have you heard of India’s laughter clubs? Imagine groups of people gathering to perform breathing exercises and then engaging in unprovoked, uncontrolled laughter.

With the COVID-19 pandemic restricting comedy events, people decided to gather outside (while maintaining social distance) to entertain themselves with their own laughter.

Who wants to be labelled mad for laughing at nothing? Are there any benefits to laughter?

According to the Mayo Clinic, laughter invigorates body organs, activates and relieves stress responses, and calms tension. It also boosts the immune system, relieves pain, increases personal satisfaction, and improves mood.

How much would you pay for a pill with all these benefits? I guess you would have to sacrifice a lot to get the medicine.  Unfortunately, not many people would be able to afford it.

Interestingly, Solomon talked about the benefits of laughter ages ago. “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones” (Proverbs 17:22).

The good news is that this medicine is available free of charge. There are numerous triggers for laughter in our environment. For example, spending time watching children play will improve your mood immediately.

Seek the company of that funny friend whose presence and words elicit laughter effortlessly. Relive funny family memories with your loved ones. It will bond your family while easing tensions.

Will you form a local laughing club? Whatever you do, remember that God wants you to have a happy, healthy life. Before you spend a fortune treating diseases, start taking a daily dose of this free medicine: laughter.

Gloomy and downcast today? Find something or someone that brings a smile to your face.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, fill my life with joy and laughter today.
