Lead Me to the Rock That is Higher Than I

From the end of the earth, I will cry to You. When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
Psalms 61:2 (NKJV)

Whenever we expect heavy rains in my country, the government warns people in areas susceptible to floods to move to higher-altitude areas. The higher one climbs, the greater the chances of survival and safety. Those who ignore this caution often end up overwhelmed by floods.

Lead Me to the Towering Rock of Safety

Millennia ago, David wrote a psalm that corresponds with the situation and choices of people in flood-prone areas. The psalmist pleaded with God, “Hear my cry, O God. Attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth, I will cry to You. When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Psalms 61:1–2).

David appears to anticipate trouble that is likely to overwhelm him unless he receives help from a power beyond him. He pleads with God to lead him to higher ground when life’s cares and troubles threaten to overwhelm him. He knows he cannot reach His desired place of safety without God’s intervention.

Lead Me to the Rock That is Higher Than I

When financial challenges, sickness, bereavement, relationship and family problems, stress, and negative emotions overwhelm you, where do you seek help? Do you worry and wallow in your misery, or do you plead with God to do what only He can do? Is the Lord your first option, or do you run to Him after you have exhausted your futile efforts?

Whenever you feel overpowered and helpless, remember that God can lift you to a place where your troubles cannot assail you. Stop concentrating on the challenges around you. Lift your eyes up because God is ready and willing to intervene in your life. Allow God to lead you to the rock that is higher than you.

Almighty God, when my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
