Learn To Number Your Days: You Will Become Wiser

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, February 16, 2021

Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Psalms 90:12 (NIV)

During the last year of our primary and secondary school education, my classmates and I counted down the days remaining before respective final examinations. However, instead of encouraging us to prepare adequately, this practice increased our anxiety.

There is a different kind of countdown that the Bible teaches. In Psalm 90:10, Moses notes that man expects to live seventy years (0r eighty, if he is strong). These years “quickly pass, and we fly away.” In essence, your life is very short.

Our prayer, then, should be, “Teach us to number our days…” Now that you know your life expectancy, you can start your countdown. Numbering your days gives you, “a heart of wisdom”, not anxiety.

While it is important to meditate on the actual number of your years that may be remaining, make proper use of your life today. God expects you to live productively and joyful, while impacting your societies positively.

We must ask God, to teach us how to fill our days with love, kindness and service to humanity. Applying a heart of wisdom means understanding that there is judgement after this life. It implies knowing that Christ is coming back soon, and living righteously.

We must maximize on every opportunity to do good. Our legacy should be one of love and peace. Every Christian should endeavour to improve the lives of as many people as possible before exiting the stage. What matters most should be service to God and humanity.

What do you want to be remembered for when you are no longer here? Make that dream your priority.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, teach me to number my days, that I may gain a heart of wisdom.
