Let my mouth be filled with Your praise, and with Your glory all the day.
Psalms 71:8 (NKJV)
Whenever I reflect on events that caused me countless pain and tears in the past, I have mixed feelings. I experience pain, regrets and gratitude. Thankfully, gratitude keeps overwhelming pain and regret as I walk more closely with God.
By looking back at my past troubles, failures and victories, I gain strength and courage to face present challenges. I am calmer and more patient than before. I know a fundamental change has occurred in my life, albeit gradually.
From Desperation to Faith and Back
It has been, and it continues to be, a rollercoaster. Only God knows how many times He has had to pursue me as I wandered from Him! Were it not for God, I would be forever lost by now.
That is why I empathize with David in Psalms 71 as he oscillates between desperation and faith in God. While he acknowledges that God has been with Him from birth to old age, David asks for assurance that his enemies will not prevail over him.
Let My Mouth Be Filled With Your Praise
To his credit, David punctuates his song with this prayer, “Let my mouth be filled with Your praise, and with Your glory all the day.” (Psalms 71:8). He is telling God, “Fight for me so that I will always have a reason to praise you! Let me not be ashamed for trusting in You, God.”
Like David, let our lips be filled with joy because of God’s faithfulness in our lives, even in our toughest moments. Let us affirm, “My tongue also shall talk of Your righteousness all the day long.” (Psalms 71:24).
Prayer
Almighty Father, fight for me and Let my mouth be filled with Your praise and with Your glory all the day.
