Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ.
Philippians 1:27 (NKJV)
I have noticed something interesting in my society. Non-Christians and nominal Christians know what is expected of a true believer. Indeed, they love holding Christians accountable to the high moral standards of the Bible.
Bring Honor to the Good News
You will hear a non-Christian tell a Christian, “Christians do not behave like that.” “I thought Christians were different.” “You mean people who are saved listen to this kind of music?” “Are you really saved?”
While they do not profess to follow Jesus, they know Christ demands of His followers superior character standards. They feel Christ’s requirements are too high yet expect believers to be compliant; after all, they accepted Christ voluntarily.
A Manner Appropriate to the Gospel
Indeed, about two thousand years ago, Paul reminded the Christians in Philippi, “Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.” (Philippians 1:27).
What does it mean to conduct ourselves worthy of the gospel of Christ? Here is Paul again: “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.” (Titus 2:11-12).
Live Worthy of the Gospel
It is, therefore, perfectly okay for both Christians and non-Christians to expect you to lead a positively different life. Because you decided to follow Jesus and announced your decision to the world, everyone expects you to live like Jesus did and according to the requirements of the gospel.
Are you living worthy of the gospel? Do you conform to the Biblical standards for thought, speech, and character? If people question your profession of faith, do not get angry. Go back to the basics and ask God to empower you to live righteously. By God’s grace, live worthy of the gospel.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, come and live in me so that I may live worthy of the gospel.
