Look Beyond Yourself

Daily Devotional – Monday, July 28, 2025
Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
Philippians 2:4 (NKJV)

Have you noticed how busy your life often is? You have deadlines to meet, bills to pay, and responsibilities to shoulder, among other issues competing for your attention. Now, ponder this: the apostle Paul wants you to create time and attend to the needs of others!

The Interests of Others

Back in Paul’s day, people lived in a culture where status and recognition were everything. Climbing the social ladder, gaining respect, and making a name for oneself were seen as the goals of life. Everyone was expected to look out for themselves first.

Therefore, when Paul told believers to put others ahead of themselves, it was a radical idea. It went completely against what society taught. He was challenging not just the culture around them but also the natural human desire to be first, noticed, and praised.

Look Beyond Yourself

Paul is not telling us to ignore our needs, but he is urging us to lift our eyes. Look around. Is someone struggling quietly? Is there a friend, a neighbor, or a stranger who just needs to know they’re seen and cared for?

When we take the time to check in, to help out, to look beyond ourselves, we are living out the heart of Christ. Think of one person who might be feeling overlooked. Send them a message, say a kind word, or ask how they’re really doing. Small acts of love make a big difference.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me not to be so wrapped up in my own concerns today that I fail to notice those around me who need my help.
